Giving Back Makes Sense

Michael and Mindy Feldman

Recognizing the important role FAU has played in each of their lives, Michael '82, and Mindy Feldman are special donors whose gifts to the University have included both generous lifetime gifts and a meaningful planned gift to endow one or more chairs, programs of study or student scholarships for FAU’s College of Business School of Accounting. Their generosity will make a difference to the University today, and for generations to come.

"Gifts should come from the heart," says Michael. "Although there were 10 years in between us, Mindy and I both studied at the School of Accounting and because of this we feel a strong loyalty and connection to this wonderful school. FAU has given us and many others like us, access to education. Our deferred gift will allow us to make an impact on the lives of students and on the university's future."

An alumnus of FAU's College of Business, Michael majored in accounting. At that time the fledgling university was just beginning to assert itself as a center of higher education. Living on campus when FAU was primarily known as a "commuter school," Michael remembers the days when the dorms were outnumbered by burrowing owls! Small class sizes and a cadre of professors who really cared about what they were teaching were two hallmarks of FAU that helped define the university then and continue to define it now. As a student in the School of Accounting, Michael found himself in a program that could not have prepared him any better. From the very beginning, FAU's School of Accounting had always produced a very high percentage of passing scores on the National CPA exam. Today the School of Accounting ranks in the top 10 nationally for its graduates' high passing rate on this exam.

After earning a bachelor's degree and passing the CPA exam on his first attempt, Michael got a job with a CPA firm in North Miami and in 1986, after four years with that firm, Michael went off on his own and founded the small company of Michael Feldman, CPA. He met Mindy, a University of Florida alumna with a degree in quantitative management, through mutual friends and eventually the two married. A professional partnership was forged as well when Mindy decided to join Michael in his work and turn the company into Feldman, Feldman & Associates. In order to do this Mindy needed to study and pass the CPA exam, and so without hesitation she turned to FAU and enrolled in the School of Accounting's one-year CPA preparation program. By the end of that year of study Mindy had earned those important three letters after her name.

Today Feldman, Feldman & Associates specializes in the accounting needs of condominium and homeowners' associations. Michael, Mindy and a third CPA retrieve financial records from management companies and handle the audits and complete the year-end financial reviews that are required by law. The business has grown steadily over the years and the firm now serves more than 300 clients.

Given their success as CPAs in such a competitive market and during such difficult financial times, the Feldmans feel gratitude to the school that trained them both so well. They have been donors to the College of Business since 2006 and consistently give to Hillel programming on campus as well. They are lifetime members of the FAU Alumni Association and are loyal supporters of various FAU athletic programs, with particular enthusiasm for the FAU Fighting Owls football team. Two years ago these football season ticket-holders made a gift of $40,000 to the FAU Football stadium. Their gift named the stadium's concession area.

With their decision to make a generous bequest to the School of Accounting within the College of Business, the Feldmans have become members of FAU's Horizon Society, the planned giving society of the FAU Foundation. By remembering FAU in their estate plans, Michael and Mindy are ensuring that academic, research and scholarship programs will continue to flourish for faculty and for generations of students to come.
